As a warm up to the tutorials, I will kind off tell you the tutorials. I will write what you need to do and such, but will also upload tutorials, so you can see what I mean.
Masking: How people mask are kind off different, but the result will be the same. So my way to mask is that I first start Sony Vegas or whatever I use as a editing program, take a clip in it, and go to PanCorp, the button over the effect button which is to the right in the clip. There it will come up a new window, with the clip in picture mode. At the bottom there is two lines, representing the time in the clip. For example, 00:00 to 02:34 means that the clip is 2 minutes and 34 seconds long. At the left of the lines, you can see a square named "Mask" press that one. You will now see a different window, acutally the same but the looks are different inside. The mouse is now looking like a cutting tool, which is what you are going to use to mask. Now, this is important so you should learn this at once: The cutting only keeps what is INSIDE of the "circle" you have marked, so don't try to cut away small pieces with this. Anyway, you drawn lines around the object you want to keep and after you have completed the "circle" everything else gets black and gone. You can't move the object around however, so you could take a picture of it and then move it around. If you have done what I've said, you are now done with the masking and ready to continue. I recommend you play a little with the masking tools to understand what you can do and such before you use it in a real movie.
Basics: The basics aren't that easy to describe, but I will give it a try anyway. Some of the basics you should learn before you can call yourself a nice editor, atleast this is my opinion so don't get offended if this is wrong compared to you, is to hit the main beats (in music videos), put on fitting effects, have a flow, and more.
Hit the main beats: to hit the main beats in music videos, you should have a song that have all right beats which are not difficult to hear. If you want to be precise, you could zoom in so much, you'll see the song flow goes up and down and such. Then it is easy to see where the main beats are, which usually are the one which are the highest "line" The tutorial will contain better information than what I can describe here.
Put on fitting effects: To put on fitting effects, you first need to see and understand where the effect will be. In music videos, like I make, the place of an effect is important. If you make the video blurry when the song is at a quite and calm place, it will just look horrible. So, first you need to understand what you will put and where and how it will be. In like techno songs, the effect called TV simulator is often used, but in wrong way. I might use it the wrong way myself, but some do it worse than others and I don't think I do it that bad as I get credit for it. TV Simulator is often used in a way that makes the clip blurry and shaking and such, but they should still be viewable, so it looks better if you take it more easier and don't make the clips blurry, it could be nice. More information about this will be in my tutorial
Have a flow: everything I've talked about under this point is acutally for music videos, but I think the flow acutally is important in every movie. With flow I mean the clips are switched and such at the same time, for example a clip switched with a other clip after 5 seconds, and the next one is also switched after 5 seconds
